Aerith Gainsborough, Final Fantasy Tactics
Worn At - Midlands Expo, February 2009; Minamicon 15
Difficulty - 2/5
Time Taken - 3 months
Cost - £80GBP
Costume Status - Active
Hardest Task - Cuffs and collar
Easiest Task - Shooes, skirt
Favourite Aspect - The skirt and petticoats. I love the shape and just the size! Don't ask me why - I just do.
Least Favourite - Collar and cuffs. My first time making them and I didn't do a brilliant job. I found them really tough, so I
cut some corners.
Why? - In my aim to make all of Aeris' outfits. To be fair, I love this one. It makes a difference from the usual pink she's in. And its just a beautiful outfit anyway
that I was overwhelmed by its cuteness to do it before any of the others of her I have on my planned list. Plus it gave me a chance to try my hand at making petticoats and everything
myself.
Construction Notes
This costume just shouted at me to be made. It was too pretty to pass up, and it gave me the excuse to by a hoopskirt! The first thing to do
was the skirt, which I used a pattern for. A butterick. I can't remember the number, but it was for a 50's style skirt. I used bottle green drill
cotton for this, to get the sturdiness and also the heaviness to keep it in place. It does up with a 8 inch zipper on the left, with three hook and eyes
on the waist band, which was added once the skirt was complete. The ribbon around the bottom of the skirt is 8 metres long and was pinned and sewn into place.
Instead of hemming (because hemming circles always makes the hem look... bumpy to me) I used some bias binding.
Next was the shirt. I used a costume pattern for this from the Simplicity range. It was meant to be a pirate shirt, but I adapted the
open neck, to make it a more V-neck shape. The pattern came with large-ish sleeves already, which made my life a lot easier. I made the collar and cuffs out of the
same bottle green drill cotton, then ironed in some vilene to make them more sturdy. They were then sewn on and snap fasteners added to make
sure they closed in the right places.
Lastly was the head scarf, which was just two rectangle of fabric, sewn together, with the ribbon sewn on oneside and held in place with a couple
of pins on my head.
