Firstly, thank you for agreeing to do this interview for Silver Star!
If you'll start by telling us who you are. Real name or online alias is fine. :]
GunstarVixen (Louise Collis irl)
2. What was it that made you interested in cosplay? Was it an outside influence,
like friends? Or a natural course that occoured as you grew up?
Silver suggested it! I now of course, owe her a lifetime of pocky for making me aware of cosplay!
(Either that or I'm gonna make her pay for my fabric shop bills!!)
3. What do you find you cosplay from mostly? Games? Anime? Manga? Disney? Do you crossplay? If so, who?
Currently I've mostly done computer games (Square Enix related) but am slowing moving into anime too.
4. What are your favourite costumes to do? Colourful ones? Really complicated ones? And why?
I love complicated costumes! Not necessarily ones that look complicated once they are done,
(I guess that's kinda the art to it, making the almost impossible look easy!) I always like to challenge myself!
5. Do you like to cosplay alone, or like to be involved in groups? Or both?
It depends, it's sometimes easier to go to a con on your own and bump into 'matching' cospayers, as it's less effort to
organise. But groups can be lots of fun especially if you all really like your character/costume. I'm really looking forward to the Sailor Moon
group in October which includes two of my best friends! (who wouldn't want to run around as school girls with super powers who fight crime?!?!)
6. Do you have any dream cosplays or groups you'd like to do?
Lenneth from Valkyrie Profile, I love the costume design (the game's a bit crappy though) It's going to be a real challenge to get all the
armour done, but hey I have till Ayacon to get it done!!! I honestly think if you have a dream cosplay you should always try and do it!
7. What would you say was the best thing about cosplaying, personally? And what would be your best experience to date?
I love sewing! I'm not particularly creative, (I can't draw or paint etc) so it gives me a great outlet for my creative urges!
I love the way it challenges me (you know the usual, how on earth do I get sleeves/shoulders/headress to look like that...) My best experience, oh
that's a tough one, I think there is two really. The first has to be the first con I ever went to crossing over the bridge to the Excel Centre with the
girls, we had such stupid cheesy grins on our faces, we were so exited, it was just so much fun! The second would be the first time I placed in a
masquerade, it's such an honor to have people give your costumes recognition, we all spend so much time, effort and money on them (which is why I
love that so many people enter their work into competitions!) that getting a well done and a massive applause is so humbling and wonderful!
8. I know most people hate to do this, but out of the cosplays you've done, which ... three, say, are your favourites and why?
- LeBlanc from Final Fantasy X-2 she got so much attention as she's so (understandably) under-done, the amazing
feedback I got made the three months of hand sewing all worth it!
- Beatrix from Final Fantasy IX mainly because I love how the embroidered rose turned out! I also had a great photo shoot with
Seraphim-Cry where I look really kick-ass which is awesome!!!
- Giselle from Disney's Enchanted. It's so out of character for me (srsly ask Silver I creeped her out all day by
looking all cute and innocent lol!!) Again it was so well receieved (which was great having sat up until 2am the
night before finishing the embroidering!) it was just so nice to spend the day as a Disney-almost-Princess!
9. For anyone looking to enter into the cosplay scene, what advice would you give?
- Don't give up! We all make mistakes or don't get things quite as accurate as we'd like, but we all improve
over time, half the fun is comparing screw ups and how we fixed them!
- Never be afraid to ask for help, cosplay forums are great if you are stuck, people are always willing to help, especially if
they have done the same thing before!
- Always buy extra! If your budget will stretch, an extra meter of fabric will often be a life saver! (says the girl who ran out of
bias binding last night d'oh)
Thank you very much for your time! Do you have anything else to add? :]
Everyone should eat more cake.
