Cosplay History

I started cosplaying back in 2007, but had been interested in it for much longer after cos.com was shown to me by my friend Finni in America. I didn't have a lot of confidence at the time so didn't pay it much mind, though the idea of dressing up as a character did interest me a lot. Somehow I heard about the MCM Expos in 2006; and decided I wanted to go. It took a while to get my friends acts together but we finally made it in October 2007. The Saturday we just went in normal clothing and wandered around. On the Sunday we actually did cosplay. It was an interesting experience. Being asked for photos was something that took me by surprise, I hadn't imagined anyone would want to photograph me. So when I was stopped and asked... it was a really big boost for my confidence.

We left that weekend, and the rest as they say is history.

I now spend a lot of my time sewing and cosplaying. I'm not of a mathematical mind, so I have no talent when it comes to making things off the cuff and without patterns. And I can't draft my own patterns because of this. That's the reason a lot of costumes, even really simple ones take me time, because I have to plan how I'm going to do them down to the last detail. But I don't mind. I prefer taking my time over one good costume, than rushing and doing three low-par costumes. But maybe that's just me.

My cosplay 'abilites' have advanced since I started. Originally I could bare sew anything, and now I can work out what I need to do when looking at pattern pieces. I've started making my own props, something I never thought I'd be able to do. And have branched into wig styling. All these things, are things I never thought I'd be able to accomplish. When I first visited cos.com, I was in awe of everyone else. And a lot of cosplayers still leave me speechless and completely astounded by their talents, but I've come to realise that everyone started somewhere!

Personal Life

I live in the UK, I was born here and have never moved away from this country. I would love to travel. Do a full around the world trip, but sadly my need to live (ie. work) consistantly gets in the way. Its a pain. But I deal with it. I figure I'll go off and do some travelling at some point. Probably when I'm old and grey!

When I'm not working, sleeping or sewing I'll sit down and play some games on my 360, PSP or playstation 2. I love to read, and will generally have a book on the go all the time. I don't buy into this vampire fad that has appeared, but I don't get up in arms about it. Its entertainment. The people who take it too seriously are the ones that ruin it. Anyway, that's another story. I sing for fun, and I draw a fair bit as well - though not everything gets finished or uploaded onto my deviantart account.

I love the theatre. Shakespeare was my first love and one of my life goals is to see all of his plays performed. I also love Sheridan and Oscar Wilde. A yearly trip with my dad is the open air theatre where he lives. Its always the highlight of my summer because come rain or shine, its amazing to watch and always brilliant fun!

If I'm not doing any of the above then you'll probably find me with the love of my life. My dog, Porter. He's the newest addition to our family and lives with my dad (I live with my mum currently). He's a labrador-staffie cross, and makes my life complete since I haven't been able to have a dog since I was a child.
